Smart materials, sustainable processes for energy production, industrial biotechnologies, and advanced pharmaceutical applications are only some of the examples of sectors where the expertise of chemical engineers is sought and highly rewarded. Furthermore, the conventional worldplayers as the chemical and Oil&Gas field are facing a context of increasing innovation and internationalization, thus requiring global competences and higher qualifications of the chemical engineers recruited.

About the programme: Chemical and Process Engineering - Sustainable Technologies and biotechnologies for Energy and Materials

All courses and activities are given in English.

The master's duration is two years (4 semesters). In the first year, courses are mainly oriented to address basic issues of the master's studies: advanced thermodynamics and transport phenomena, introduction to basic design, and introduction to industrial safety (42 ECTS). A total of 12 ECTS are dedicated to electives and laboratories.

Students are required to complete a research project (18 ECTS) before becoming eligible to graduate. Up to 6 ECTS within the project may be dedicated to internships in University Departments, Research Institutes or private companies. Graduates of the program will have the training to go on to work in numerous fields, including the conventional chemical and process industry (petrochemical, specialty chemicals, pharmaceutical), the wide-spread energy industrial sectors (up-stream and down-stream Oil&Gas, energy generation, greenenergy production), and many other specific sectors (material production, food technologies, industrial biotechnologies, etc.). Completion of the STEM Master’s degree can also lead to entering PhD. level studies.

A Dual Degree Agreement is active with Columbia University in the City of New York (USA). Applicants, upon completing successfully the programme, will obtain both the Laurea Magistrale in Chemical and Process Engineering from the University of Bologna and the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Columbia University.

Furthermore, international agreements allow students to spend part of their studies abroad (for exams, research, or internships).

About the “Materials & Biotechnologies” option

The option concerning materials and biotechnologies introduces the students to advanced knowledge in materials science and engineering, as well as in biotechnological processes. These are the areas where Key Enabling Technologies affecting our future society will be developed.

About the “Off-shore Engineering” option

The programme is offered with the support of companies in the Ravenna Off-Shore District and of Fondazione Flaminia. The first year of the programme will be delivered in Bologna, while the second year will be offered in Ravenna, where courses on off-shore engineering and up-stream Oil&Gas technologies are offered, together with internships in companies active in the design and construction of Oil&Gas off-shore systems and facilities. Second year electives (12 ECTS) can be selected from several topics, ranging from project management to structural engineering and environmental applications.
