Water Resources Management in the Driest Continent: Australia

Prof. Hector Malano
(University of Melbourne)

Martedì 10 Settembre
ore 15
Aula 4.1

Australia is the driest continent on earth. It is also said it's the land of droughts and flooding rains due to the variability of its climate. Since European settlement, especially during the 20th century, agriculture and economic development has imposed profound changes to the hydrologic cycle, especially in the Murray-Darling Basin. The basin has one of the largest storage capacity to runoff ratios in the world causing significant environmental impacts on the system and generating conflicting decisions about the management of the basin's resources to restore its environmental integrity. This presentation will discuss the historic evolution of the basin development and management from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. It will also discuss the evolution of water management science and research from the sole focus on hydrologic and bio-physical aspects to the interdisciplinary nature of modern water resource management research.
